Keith Haring is one of the leader of the neo-pop trend and was one of the most representative artists of his generation. He is son of Joan and Allen Haring and he had four younger brothers. He was born on the 4 May 1958 in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. He found out about his artistic talent when he was really young and after high school, he entered the Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburgh.
In 1976, he travelled throughout the USA hitch-hiking, stopping in various cities in order to watch closer the works of the most important artists in America, that he could only see on the pages of the specialised magazines. When he came back to Pittsburgh in the same year, he entered the University and made his first important exhibition at the Pittsburgh Arts and Crafts Centre.
Before his entrance into the “official” world of art, he was marginalised. In 1978 he entered the School of Visual Arts in New York, becoming famous during the 80s with his murals in subways and, later, with his works exhibited hither and yon, in various clubs and improvised “vernissage”.
The news of the American artist are extraordinary and attract the attention of many experts. Keith Haring, along the lines of his unconscious model Andy Warhol, created a new urban language, made of almost childish and primitive figures, characterised by a black mark that reminds of the comics.
His first real personal show was in Shafrazi in 1982 and in the next years he had lots of success with exhibitions all over the world. In April 1986 he opened the Pop Shop in New York City. At this point he is a great artist, famous all over the world and also rich. He was transgressive and he had a profligate life, particularly his sexual life.
In 1988 Haring was diagnosed with Aids. He announced it during an interview to “Rolling Stone”, making him even more famous. The artist claimed that his Aids wasn’t a surprise: he went beyond lots of his limits and he took advantage of the freedom that New York City offered.
Before he died he created the Keith Haring Foundation to support children’s programs and organizations dedicated to raising Aids awareness.
Haring’s works have never had decreases, on the contrary his business increased even more and so he became also “commercial”.
His incomes are not only based on the artistic production, but also on the gadgets (in many photos you can see Haring himself wearing some shirts with the reproductions of his paintings).
The international success of his works contributed to the proliferation of the art in public areas, spreading a great artistic awareness. His compositions, simple, direct and immediate, easily attract the attention of the public and you can interpret them in different ways.
